In honor of Global Diversity Month, the Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management (I-DIEM) and Tidal Basin, LLC, are aiming to grow the Lt. General Julius Becton Scholarship Program into a $100,000 annual fund with the CEO Challenge.
Tidal Basin CEO, Dan Craig, calls on his industry colleagues and competitors to donate to the Lt. General Julius Becton Scholarship Program to help diversify the emergency management industry. Tidal Basin will be matching up to $20,000 in donations to the scholarship.
This program was developed in recognition of Lt. General Julius Becton Jr’s accomplishment as the first minority to serve as FEMA Director from 1985 to 1989. The scholarship is awarded annually to minority students in emergency management or homeland security-related fields of study at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels of study to assist with tuition-related expenses for the academic year.
“The goal of this program is to encourage and support diversity and inclusion of amazing talent in the emergency management industry,” said I-DIEM’s Co-Founder and CEO, Chauncia Willis. “This scholarship is presented annually to minority college-level students in emergency management or homeland security related fields of study. The goal of this program is to encourage and support diversity and inclusion of amazing talent in the emergency management industry.” Each donation to the program helps I-DIEM’s efforts towards educating future industry leaders and promoting diversified and equitable disaster response.
Wendell Grinton Jr., Carmen Reed, and Daniella Plaza were this years’ recipients of the Lt. General Julius Becton Jr. Scholarship Program. Dedicated to increasing representation of women and people of color within the emergency management profession while supporting minority students in their educational journey, Grinton Jr., Reed, and Plaza are the program’s first scholarship recipients.
The scholarship program was announced last June 2020 on Tidal Basin’s Disaster Recovery Roundtable podcast and was supported by a $5,000.00 personal donation from Craig, and an additional matching corporate donation from Tidal Basin.
