Over 1,800 professionals from federal agencies, local and state governments, nonprofits, academia, and private-sector vendors are expected to attend.

The four-day event features 60-minute breakout sessions on topics like counterterrorism, cybersecurity, election security, infrastructure protection, and community resilience, alongside exhibit booths showcasing cutting-edge technologies, from AI platforms to biological threat detection systems.

The NHSC began in 2005 in Dallas, Texas. The conference was started from a need to strengthen cross-discipline collaboration among Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) programs and first responders. What started as a regional fire-chief–led workshop quickly grew into a national platform for sharing lessons learned, technology demos, and best practices.

  • The 2010 conference in New Orleans added federal-public health and transportation security programs.
  • By 2013, in Los Angeles, NHSC merged with counterterrorism forums like LinCT and Major Cities Chiefs.
  • Attendance has steadily risen since then, surpassing 1,800 professionals by 2025.

NHSC has welcomed high-level figures across homeland security disciplines:

  • DHS Under Secretary Dr. Dimitri Kusnezov (2024)
Discussed challenges in preparedness and resilience amid rapid changes
  • Pierre Colliex, Police Attaché from the French Embassy (2015)
Delivered firsthand insight on the Paris terrorist bombings in a law-enforcement hot-seat.
  • FEMA and CISA officials
Spoke in sessions on community lifeline systems and cybersecurity futures.
  • Date: August 25–28, 2025
  • Venue: Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Allen Y. Lew Place NW, Washington, DC 20001.
  • Attendees: 1,800+ professionals including federal, state/local, military, NGO, academic, and private sector.
  • Speaking: Sessions cover counterterrorism, cybersecurity, grants management, emergency operations, election security, and more.
