FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Programs
Youth Preparedness is a key focus for FEMA in creating a Culture of Preparedness in the U.S. In this episode of Disaster Recovery Roundtable we’re joined by FEMA’s Branch Chief for Preparedness Programs, Allison Carlock, as she shares the importance of engaging youth to increase community preparedness. Allison will also share tips on how emergency managers can start a youth program in their own community.
FEMA has a variety of programs and initiatives aimed at engaging and encouraging youth to increase their ability to prepare and respond to disasters. One of the most visible programs is FEMA’s Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). The YPC consists of selected youth from each FEMA region including high school and college-aged students. The YPC members serve as ambassadors to promote preparedness activities within each FEMA region. FEMA also has several resources available for teachers to support preparedness activities in the classroom. Teachers, emergency managers, and others can request materials from the FEMA Publications Warehouse to support their youth preparedness education activities. Allison Carlock is the National Preparedness Programs Branch Chief in the Individual and Community Preparedness Division (ICPD) for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In this role, she is responsible for leading the Agency’s efforts for youth preparedness, financial preparedness, regional engagement, and continuity training for community-based organizations.
Prior to serving as Branch Chief, Allison was the National Youth Preparedness Lead for FEMA. In this role, she was responsible for leading the Agency’s efforts for engaging youth in preparedness programming, messaging, and initiatives. This included the Youth Preparedness Technical Assistance Center and National Youth Preparedness Council. Allison also led the National Strategy on Youth Preparedness Education, which convenes over 60 organizations, schools, and agencies as Affirmers in engaging children and youth in emergency preparedness initiatives.
Greg Padgett is the host of Disaster Recovery Roundtable and brings 25 years' experience as a journalist, emergency manager, crisis communicator, and host. From 1991 to 2001, he was a journalist and meteorologist with several TV stations across the southeast U.S. He holds the American Meteorological Society's and National Weather Association's Broadcast Seals of Approval. He previously served as Natural Hazards Program Manager for the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, overseeing the development of the state's hurricane, severe weather, flood, and earthquake response plans. He has organized statewide media tours, supported public information officer training, and provided technical assistance in developing response plans and Whole Community preparedness campaigns for local jurisdictions. He also served as an on-air meteorologist for the Weather Channel's Radio Network from 2002 to 2007. He is a past recipient of the National Weather Association's Broadcaster of the Year award.
