In the wake of Typhoon Halong, which brought catastrophic flooding and widespread destruction to western Alaska, a swift and decisive response was essential. The typhoon left entire villages uninhabitable, forcing hundreds of families to evacuate to Anchorage with little more than what they could carry. Recognizing the urgent need for safe and secure lodging as winter approached, our team mobilized quickly, so that every survivor had a warm place to stay.
In partnership with the State of Alaska’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHS&EM), FEMA, and the American Red Cross, we launched the state’s non-congregate sheltering (NCS) program to provide critical support. This initiative offers emergency hotel housing for families affected by the storm, providing a beacon of hope amidst the devastation for this culturally sensitive survivor population.
The program has been a vital lifeline for those in need. To date, more than 140 households, which include over 550 individuals, are now housed in safe and comfortable accommodations, receiving three meals a day and access to continued support services. Each placement is a testament to the dedication and collaborative spirit of the Tidal Basin team and our state, local, and tribal partners.
As the recovery effort continues, individuals and families continue to arrive from outlying villages and other affected areas. Tidal Basin remains on the ground, steadfast in our commitment to seeing this mission through and providing compassionate, effective assistance to the Western and Southcentral Alaskan communities we are privileged to serve.
